Penn-Roosevelt State Park Camping Trip

Friday, June 11, 2010 Travis and I set out to camp at Penn-Roosevelt State Park. We researched various places to go in Pennsylvania, and decided on this one because it was described as small and rustic. Our thoughts were that fewer people would be around.
The drive was around three hours, but we saw lots of pretty land. Part of the drive was through Lancaster County, which is known for the Amish. We saw several Amish men out plowing their fields.
The campsite we stayed at was very quiet. All you could hear were the field mice running from tree to tree, birds chirping, and water flowing in the river down the hill from us. We arrived around 1:00 and set-up our camp, then went hiking with Theta. Theta loved every minute of the hike! Travis and I enjoyed it, but discovered we are out of shape. We kept hiking hoping to find a clearing where we could look out at the mountains, but we never did find one. After our hike, it was time to start supper, but we found that we had forgotten to bring a lighter or matches. It took us about two hours to finally get a fire started. We had to use paper towels, paper, and the cigarette lighter in his pickup. I'm sure it was rather humorous watching us try different things. We were putting things in the gas tank and the oil from his pickup, and trying to light them. Finally, after dark, we finished supper and eating. We ended the night sitting around our campfire talking and roasting marshmallows.
It was nice to have a fun outing alone together before he started back to work this week. We can't wait to do it again!
